The Woodgrove Wolverines opened the 2014 season in impressive style Friday night. Less than three minutes into the season Woodgrove QB Billy Sheehan connected with Dylan Mellor for a 40-yard touchdown pass. The two point conversion failed with an incomplete pass but three minutes later Wolverine’s running back Charlie Clewis scored on an 18-yard run and this time the two-point conversion worked for a quick 14-0 lead. The Freedom Eagles were unable to get their offense on track and Woodgrove’s three touchdown first and second quarters resulted in a 42-0 halftime score.
Woodgrove would score three more times in the second half resulting in a 63-0 season opening victory. For the game Freedom was held to 20 yards passing and -57 yards rushing on 29 attempts. Woodgrove had an impressive and balanced offense with 247 yards in the air and 239 yards on the ground averaging over seven yards a carry.
Individual performances of note for Woodgrove were:
- QB Billy Sheehan ’15 broke two school records Friday night for most yards in a game (247) and most TDs passes in a game (5).
- Receiver Dylan Mellor had 161 yards receiving, breaking his record of 145 from last year
- Running back Charlie Clewis had 121 yards on 16 carries and 2 TD’s with a 7.6 yards per carry average
- Team defense for both a shutout and a complete shutdown of the Eagles running game with a -1.3 yards per carry.
