Purcellville (Oct. 28, 2013) – Woodgrove High School celebrated a “Sweet” Homecoming Friday with the Wolverines whitewashing Dominion, 38-0, behind senior Josh Sweet’s 268 yards rushing on 39 carries including four touchdowns.
Woodgrove (5-3 record) and Dominion (4-4) came into the contest ranked next to each other in the 4A North football standings at No. 9 and No. 10 with 16 teams making the postseason. Both teams were also coming off tough losses the week before so Friday’s contest played in frigid temperatures was key for both sides.
Sweet has now scored 25 touchdowns on the season and has rushed for almost 1,400 yards including four consecutive 200+ performances. Dominion, led by junior linebacker Chad Smith, actually played Sweet tough, especially in the first half, but the Titans could not overcome six turnovers in the contest, which left the defense on the field too long.
As the night wore on, Sweet and the Wolverine offensive line simply wore the Titans down and Sweet ran into, around and sometimes over the defense.
It took just four plays into the evening for the tone to be set as Dominion coughed up a fumble on its second snap and Wolverines, taking over at the Titan 13, scored two plays later as Sweet took a snap in the Wildcat offense and waggled his was around the left corner to score just 76 seconds into the game. The first of senior Andrew Harper’s five PAT’s made it 7-0.
Three plays later and Dominion fumbled again with Woodgrove taking over at the Titan 32. Dominion’s defense held but the Titans lost the field position battle most of the first quarter.
The Titans broke across midfield towards the end of the opening quarter on an inside reverse to speedy wide receiver Luke Thompson that picked up 32 yards to the Wolverine 33.
Dominion nudged into the Red Zone only to have sophomore linebacker Billy Mullen sack Titan senior quarterback Donnie Gasser on 3rd-and-8 from the 19. Dominion’s 40-yard field goal attempt was no good.
The Wolverines passing game behind senior quarterback Will Koester and junior receiver Dylan Mell0r jumpstarted Woodgrove’s offense and prevented the score from being 7-0 at the half.
After an interception by Woodgrove sophomore DB Cole Rosick at the Wolverine 19, Woodgrove got things rolling on a 27-yard Koester-to-Mellor hook-up and then a 22-yard gain by Sweet out of the Wildcat again, moved the ball into the Red Zone. The Titans stiffened and forced a 33-yard field goal by Harper to make it 10-0 with 6:12 until half.
The teams then traded punts until Woodgrove took over its own 37 with less than two minutes left in the second quarter. Koester hit Mellor in stride down the right sidelines for a 62-yard score with 1:10 to go that not only put the Wolverines up 17-0 but deflated the Titans going into the locker room at the half.
Woodgrove’s gameplan in the second half was simple: hand the ball off to Sweet and the Wolverines did that 10 consecutive times including a six play drive to start the half that made it 24-0 after Sweet busted through the line of scrimmage for a 41-yard score.
After Dominion muffed a punt on its own 11, Sweet needed just two carries to score, making 31-0.
Sweet’s final actin of the night game on the opening drive of the fourth quarter as he carried the ball five times on a 6-play, 57-yard drive, scoring for the fourth time on the night on a highlight reel 15-yard run that including a big collision near the goal line as the Wolverine battering ram barreled into the end zone, making it 38-0.
Woodgrove hosts 5A Broad Run this Friday while Dominion hosts 4A Park View.
