Tuscarora vs St. John’s – 25-19, 25-20
Tuscarora vs J.E.B. Stuart – 25-19, 25-14
Tuscarora vs Westfield – 25-16, 24-26
Tuscarora vs Mount Vernon – 25-7, 25-13
Tuscarora vs Westfield – 18-25, 20-25
Tournament Summary: The Huskies traveled to the J.E.B. Stuart Raider Rumble Invitational tournament on Saturday, September 27, 2014, and recorded a third place finish. The Huskies faced St. John’s, Stuart, and Westfield in Pool A, while Pool B was comprised of Marshall, Falls Church, Mt.
Vernon, and Annandale. After working on a new-look offense during the week, Tuscarora nearly ran the table in pool play finishing 5-1 and grabbing the #1 seed going into tournament play. The Huskies faced Mt. Vernon, their first-round regional tournament opponent from last season, and handled them easily in 2 sets. After a long break, Tuscarora had to square off against the Westfield Bulldogs in a rematch from their pool play split earlier in the day. The Bulldogs dominated the Huskies with their powerful offense and relentless defense, eliminating Tuscarora from tournament play. Westfield moved on to face Marshall in an epic championship game that saw Marshall win the Raider Rumble in a 2-1 match where the third and final set was a back and forth battle where both teams led multiple times until Marshall pulled away with a 15-12 victory.
Tournament MVP: Alexis Coombs was dominant all day finishing with 38 kills and received the highest number of votes in the All-Tournament team selection garnering the tournament MVP award.
Husky Player of the Tournament: Vanessa Marinelli ran the new-look Husky offense with efficiency and finished the tournament with 85 assists on 177 attempts. She also blasted 9 aces, 5 kills, 15 digs, and 9 blocks to round out her excellent performance.
