Leesburg, VA (N0v. 10, 2015) – “The Diary of Anne Frank,” recently re-adapted for the stage by Wendy Kesselman, from the original play by Goodrich and Hackett, will be performed November 11th through the 14th at Tuscarora High School.
Justin Daniel, Tuscarora’s theatre director since the school’s founding in 2010, has taken a broad view of framing the play in the context of personal decision-making and actions taken by victims, survivors and veterans, all impacting the footprint of history.
Daniel is traveling with the cast and crew to The Holocaust Museum in Richmond, to learn about survivor Jay Ipson, through experiential exhibits. The students will be crawling through narrow tunnels, imitating Ipson’s situation while in hiding. The museum’s exhibits also reveal subsequent genocides in other regions, with the goal of encouraging political change and decreasing human suffering.
In addition, Laurie Maggiano met with the cast and crew to discuss her late father’s (Andy Bergner) experiences as a liberator of a German concentration camp. She is editor of a recently published compilation of his World War II-era letters to his friend, Mary Jane Waterman, on the home front. “Just Call Me Soldier Boy” will be available for sale at each “Anne Frank” performance. All profits from the $19 book are donated to Operation Homefront, which provides mortgage-free homes to disabled veterans.
This multi-layered educational approach utilizes primary historical documents to frame the significance of World War II. It is part of the “One to the World” approach encouraged by Dr. Eric Williams, Loudoun County Public Schools’ superintendent.
Daniel is inviting veterans, rabbis and their guests, to a complimentary showing of the opening night performance, at 5 p.m. November 11th (Veteran’s Day). Tuscarora will host a reception in their honor, starting at 4:30.
The “Diary of Anne Frank” will continue November 12th, 13th and 14th at 7 p.m. with an understudy performance on Saturday, November 14th, at the 2:30 matinee. Tickets are $10.
