(March 10, 2014) – Tuscarora High School senior Jazmyne Howard has committed to join head coach Toni West where she will play basketball for Shepherd University starting in the 2014-2015 school year.
“I’m just blessed that I can play another four years of basketball and this time at the collegiate level,” said the 5-foot-10 Howard.
At the collegiate level, Howard will play for Shepherd’s second year coach in West who served as the Division II Ram’s assistant coach last season and has prior head coaching experience at California State University East Bay and Las Positas College.
“I chose Shepherd because the coaches and players really made me feel at home,” Howard said. “When coach West spoke to me, she really made me feel like I was needed on their team, and she would constantly tell me how much I could help her team grow.”
After taking over the Rams program in 2013, West led her team to a 4-23 record including a 3-18 finish in the Mountain East Conference. West
“Coach West and coach Nikki Turner really loved me for my defense so I feel that I can be a key defensive player on their team,” said Howard who will play either forward or center for the Rams.
In 2013, Howard averaged six points and six rebounds for the Tuscarora Huskies who went 14-12. After winning the Conference 14 third place game over Stone Bridge High School on Feb. 21, the Huskies, led by head coach Michael Newkirk, fell to Mount Vernon High School, 69-46 in the first round of the 5A North region tournament on Feb. 24.
Playing for Tuscarora was not always something Howard thought, but what went from being a hobby of hers a decade ago has turned into her true passion today.
“I’ve played for eight years. I first started playing as just a hobby, but as time went by I started to really love the game of basketball,” Howard said.
