(May 23, 2015) – The Murph Challenge is the Official Forged® annual fundraiser, benefiting the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
This amazing event will take place throughout the United States on May 25, 2015. Formerly known as ‘Memorial Day Murph’, The Murph Challenge is an extended version of the Memorial Day tradition that so many supporters have been taking part in for the last several years.
In 2014, Forged® raised over $250,000 with The Murph Challenge for the LT. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation (501c3). With such overwhelming success, the Foundation was able to create and award three new scholarships out of the thirteen that are now presented on an annual basis
LT. Michael P. Murphy was a United States Navy SEAL who was posthumously awarded the U.S. military’s highest decoration, the Congressional Medal of Honor, for his actions during Operation Red Wing in Afghanistan.
Most notably portrayed in the film “Lone Survivor”, Lt. Murphy put himself into harms way in order to relay the position of his unit, an act that ultimately led to the rescue of Luttrell and the recovery of the remains of the three who were killed in the battle.
Lt. Murphy was an avid adherent of CrossFit and after his death one of his favorite workouts was named after him. The workout, which he referred to as ‘Body Armor,’ is now called ‘Murph.’ While wearing a 20 lb. weighted vest (substitute for body armor), it is a one-mile run followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups and 300 squats, followed by another mile run; done for time.
The ’MURPH’ is more than just a workout, it is an event that helps push us, humble us, and dedicate a bit of pain and sweat for those who have given so much! Said Joe Callahan, Fairfax County Firefighter and force behind organizing Murph Challenges from years past, “What is Courage…, when you are tired and wonder HOW you can do it, think about WHY you are doing it and the how will work itself out.”
Registration is NOT required to participate, but you do get a cool shirt for signing up. Likewise, you do not have do the workout if you register to receive a shirt. Everything is completely voluntary. To register for The Murph Challenge or donate visit www.themurphchallenge.com and sign up.
Of the 2110 represented affiliates hosting the Murph Challenge, Crossfit Reston, representing itself as a site with one of largest number of participants registered to pay tribute will be hosting heat times at 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 and 11:00 on Monday, May 25th. Although time slots are currently filled, your support and encouragement are always welcomed.
This Memorial Day, please honor and remember the men and women who have paid the ultimate price while defending their fellow citizen, neighbors, and friends; whether it is in support as a public servant, firefighter, police officer or member of the United States Armed Forces.
