Sterling, VA (March 20, 2015) – The Potomac Falls Athletic Booster Club cordially invites you to attend the Loudoun County School Board meeting scheduled for Tuesday, March 24th, 6:30pm at the LCPS Administration Building, 21000 Education Court, Ashburn, VA 20148.
Our objective: To appeal for a desperately needed renovation to Potomac Falls High School athletic facilities for safety and competitive reasons.
As Potomac Falls High School nears its 20th Anniversary, our athletic facilities have fallen into a serious state of disrepair and pose a serious risk to our student athletes and community. Some examples: Our grass stadium field, baseball and softball fields have significant drainage issues which have resulted in the actual cancellation of games, our tennis courts are now tripping hazards, and our stadium restrooms have been neglected to the point that they actually have significant areas of rust. This has been permitted to occur while tens of millions of dollars have been spent over the past five years on new high schools with state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, millions have been allocated for additions/renovations to high schools previously updated and/or younger than Potomac Falls. Our student athletes are at a competitive disadvantage. Why must a subset of our teams practice off-campus due to poor facilities? Why must our teams often play more road then home games due to field playing surface issues? Why have previously known drainage issues not been addressed thus rendering practice and game fields unusable at various points in a season?
This is a community matter and we must band together as agents for change. We have opened dialogue with our School Board, Board of Supervisors, and Parks and Recreation Representatives. An honest effort has been made to steer the narrative. If change is desired, while we agree it is deserved, your support is necessary to provide our PFHS student athletes an experience equivalent to their peers across the county. Our objective is to ensure level playing fields, honest competition, and balance across the county.
Your attendance at the School Board Meeting is desired. Those wishing to also speak before the School Board on behalf of Potomac Falls High School must contact the Superintendent’s Office at 571.252-1020 at least three days in advance of the meeting. You will be asked to provide your name, address, telephone number, subject matter and organization represented. You may also e-mail the Clerk of the Board at Christine.Coleman@lcps.org. Speakers may also add themselves to the Delegations list by signing in with the Clerk of the Board at the dais in the School Board Meeting Room prior to the start of the meeting.
In conclusion, the questions posed are serious, the capital necessary to provide the solution significant. Our self-sustaining athletic department cannot be expected to generate the revenue required for facility improvement. Moreover, our booster club should not have to re-purpose revenue earmarked for scholarships, uniforms, equipment, activities and meals to address capital investments. These are the obligation of local government. Your support on March 24th is sincerely appreciated.
