Ashburn, VA (August 27, 2015) – The Stone Bridge Bulldogs kicked off the 2015 volleyball season with a 3-0 sweep of Fairfax High School. The Bulldogs, coming off a 23-4 season last year, start the season with five new players including senior transfer setter Angela Tender.
The season opener match began with an 0-3 deficit before senior libero Abby DeVido served four in a row to get the Bulldogs on track. Senior outside hitter Ashlyn Dunlop had an overpass smash that got the fans cheering and the team up 11-7. Senior middle blocker/opp Dejia Denhi used all of her 6’3” height for two blocks and a block kill and a 15-8 Bulldog lead. Dunlop followed late in Set 1 with another of her signature smash kills as Stone Bridge cruised to a 25-17 win.
In Set 2 senior outside hitter Maddie Ashwell’s serving guided the Bulldogs to a 7-4 lead before a charge by Fairfax tied it up at 8-8. The teams traded points to 12-12 before junior opposite hitter Gabrielle Scudder served three in a row for a 15-12 lead and a Fairfax timeout. Tender’s timely setter dump kill fired up the gym at 16-14. The Bulldogs were unable to pull away and were only up 19-16 before they went on a roll behind a huge block kill by sophomore middle blocker Caroline Burnett. Tough serving by Tender finished off the set with a score of 25-16.
In Set 3 Stone Bridge coach Jill Raschiatore changed the lineup and went from a 5-1 to a 6-2 offense with Tender and sophomore Katey Muskett as setters. This change worked well opening up with a score of 4-1. Powered by a nice kill by Denhi and two block kills by Burnett the Bulldogs pulled out to a 12-7 lead. Fairfax had an almost circus-act return to keep a play alive only to have Denhi get another kill for the evening. Fairfax tied it up at 16-16 but a cross-court kill by Tender and another smashing kill by Dunlop put Stone Bridge in command 22-18. The match ended with a commanding kill by Tender and block kill by Burnett, both new players to the squad and already solid contributors, as the Bulldogs won the final set 25-20.
Afterwards coach Jill Raschiatore said she was pleased with the play compared to pre-season but saw some areas to improve on, including the three out-of-rotation violation calls made against her team. Coach Raschiatore was, however, pleased with other aspects of the match, citing Burnett’s block kills and Denhi’s dominating plays at the net.
It was a complete sweep for the Bulldogs as freshman and JV both won their matches 2-0.
