(Nov. 18, 2013) – The names may have changed but Stone Bridge High School girls volleyball keeps collecting the titles as the Bulldogs claimed the first ever 5A North championship Saturday with a 25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 25-18 win over Ashburn rival Broad Run.
Stone Bridge (25-2) has now won four straight “regional” crowns having taken three straight Northern Region championships in the old VHSL playoff format. Both the Bulldogs and Broad Run (21-10) advance to this week’s 5A state semifinals at VCU in Richmond.
The Bulldogs, looking for the program’s first ever state volleyball title after making it to the Final Four in each of the last three years and to the finals in 2010, will play 5A South runner-up Princess Anne (23-8) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Spartans will face 5A South champion Atlee (29-2) on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Atlee edged Princess Anne in the 5A South finals, 25-27, 25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 15-11.
