Dulles, Va. (September 17, 2014) – Stone Bridge High School golf competed against golf teams from Broad Run, Potomac Falls, Tuscarora, Briar Woods, and Freedom High School at 1757 Golf Course in Sterling, Va., on September 17, 2014.
Stone Bridge shot the following scores overall after a hard fought back nine: Brandon Locke, 78; Logan Goodrich, 80; Connor Steggerda, 79; and Jackson Flynn with a low score for Stone Bridge of 76, for a total score of 313, placing Stone Bridge in a tie for third place with Freedom.
Tuscarora won the tournament with a score of 295 and Briar Woods placed second with a score of 306.
While the back nine was a challenge for the top four Bulldogs scoring between 40 and 42, Connor Steggerda who was playing as Stone Bridge’s fifth player, had a miraculous shot out of the center rear bunker on hole #18 that dropped in the cup for birdie!
Connor was feeling the pressure of having to hit a fried egg sand shot out of a bunker where any shot too long would result in the ball entering the water hazard in front of the green. Connor hit a masterful shot into the cup! That shot placed Stone Bridge into the tie with Freedom for third place.
The playoff proceeded on the first hole at 1757. Stone Bridge scored a total of 19 strokes to Freedom’s score of 24 on that first hole securing the win! Clutch shots were made by all four of Stone Bridge’s players during the playoff hole including a 4 foot birdie put by Logan Goodrich and a solid par by Brandon Locke.
Stone Bridge will participate in the 5A Regional Golf Tournament, hosted by Halifax County in South Boston, Va., on October 6, at the Greens Folly Golf Course.
