Leesburg (May 28, 2014) – The Bulldogs won a back and forth, thrilling game against a very tough Freedom HS (South Riding) 6-5 in the bottom of 7th inning.
The FHS Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead after their first two at-bats but the SBHS Varsity fought back to make it 2-2 with RBI hit by JB Bukauskas and sacrifice fly by Mason Newcombe. Freedom HS would take back the lead in the 4th with three more runs and lead 5-2 until the bottom of the 5th when the Bulldogs would rally to tie the score at 5-5. Sophomore Eli Quiceno knocked in fellow sophomore John Callahan to make it 5-3 and then junior Tanner Karafa hit a booming double to close the score to 5-4. Junior Michael Kuzbel singled in Karafa to round out the 5th inning scoring and tie the game at 5-5.
Sophomore David Mocabee came in relief of junior JZ Zaferakis and sophomore Lawton Riggs and pitched very well to earn the victory. He kept the Eagles’ bats down in the 5th through the 7th innings which set up a team really in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Quiceno and Karafa walked and Michael Kuzbel got the runners in scoring position with a sharp ground out to 2nd and JB Bukauskas knocked in the winning RBI with a infield single to walk off 6-5.
The Bulldogs earn the #1 seed from Conference 14 and have a bye into the Regional Quarterfinals that will be played at Stone Bridge HS on Monday at 6pm.
