Kuzbel was one of three Hoyas with three hits and finished with four RBI. Nick Collins (Carthage, N.C./Union Pines) also had three hits and two RBI and Ryan Busch (Falcon Heights, Minn./Roseville Area) also had three hits. Eric Webber (Stockton, Calif./Saint Mary’s) had two singles and two RBI and Austin Shirley (Strafford, Pa./Conestoga) scored three runs.
Jimmy Swad (Washington, D.C./St. Albans) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, striking out four, to pick up his first collegiate win. Matt Hollenbeck (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) started on the mound for the Hoyas and went three innings, giving up five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out six. David Ellingson (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands College Park) pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts.
The Hoyas (5-8) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Curtiss Pomeroy (Shrewsbury, Mass./Saint John’s/Phillips Andover) led off with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Busch and went to third on a groundout by Beau Hall (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City). Webber pushed him across the plate with a two-out RBI single into center field.
GU responded with some more small ball to produce a run in the top of the third. Shirley walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kuzbel grounded out to the right side, pushing Shirley to third. A single by Collins brought in Shirley to tie the score, 2-2.
WMU regained the lead with four runs, three off of Hollenbeck and one off of Tim Davis (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS), in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Hoyas cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Shirley again got things started, getting hit in the hand to earn first base. Kuzbel pushed him to third with a single to left-center. Collins chopped a single over the head of the first baseman to knock in Shirley and send Kuzbel to third. The throw to third base from the right fielder was wild and Kuzbel continued home to bring the score to 6-4.
After WMU added two more runs in the sixth, Georgetown sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the eighth. With one out, nine-straight Hoyas reached base, starting with a double by Busch. He went to third on a single from Hall and scored on Webber’s second RBI single. Chase Bushor (San Diego, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) followed with a single to load the bases and, after Shirley walked to score Hall, Kuzbel launched a fastball well over the right field fence to put Hoyas in front, 10-8.
The Blue & Gray added two insurance runs in the ninth when Bushor drove in Hall, who had doubled, with a sacrifice fly. Later in the inning, Joseph Bialkowski (Raleigh, N.C./Needham B. Broughton) singled in Shirley to provide the final margin, 12-8.
Georgetown will conclude its Florida trip with an 10 a.m. matchup with Lehigh on Saturday morning. Right-hander Matt Smith (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) will get the start for the Hoyas. The two teams played on Wednesday, with GU coming away with a 10-9, walk-off victory.
