(Jan. 31, 2014) – A sterling resident was scammed out of more than $10,000 by a hoax caller claiming to be from the IRS.
According to the latest Loudoun County Sheriff’s Daily Crime Report, a resident received a call from someone reporting to be from the IRS who claimed they owed back taxes. The caller claimed that warrants would be issued if they did not pay the sum owed.
The caller had the victim purchase money cards. After paying the sum, they contacted the caller at the provided number who now claimed they owed additional monies. The victim again provided the amount requested using money cards.
The victim later realized they had been scammed out of over $10,000 and contacted the IRS and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
