Ashburn, VA (October 5, 2016) – A ceremony formally dedicating softball fields at Trailside Park in Ashburn in honor of Madison Small is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Saturday, October 8, 2016, at the park, which is located at 20375 Claiborne Parkway. Members of the public are invited to attend the dedication ceremony.
Earlier this year, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution naming softball fields #1 and #2 at Trailside Park, “The Madison Small Softball Complex.” The resolution honored the memory of Small, the Broad Run High School senior and softball team captain who passed away suddenly in 2015.
A bronze plaque with Small’s name has been placed at the softball fields at Trailside Park. The plaque will be unveiled at the ceremony October 8 during the annual Madison Small Scholarship Benefit Tournament hosted by the Ashburn Girls Softball League. The league renamed its scholarship in Small’s honor in recognition of her contributions to the softball community and her impact on the league. Small grew up playing softball in the Ashburn Girls Softball League and considered Trailside Park her home field.
The resolution adopted by the Board of Supervisors reads:
“WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors has a policy for naming of county parks, sites and facilities (Board of Supervisors’ Policy for Naming Public Facilities); and
WHEREAS, in April 2015, the Loudoun softball community suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Broad Run High School senior captain, Madison Small: and
WHEREAS, Madison was a four-year varsity softball player for the Broad Run Spartans; and
WHEREAS, Madison began her softball career playing on a multitude of teams and grew up playing in the Ashburn Girls Softball League (AGSL); and
WHEREAS, Madison played on many fields throughout the area, however her home base was Trailside Park in Ashburn; and
WHEREAS, in honor of Madison’s contributions to the softball community and her impact with the Ashburn Girls Softball League, the annual AGSL Scholarship has been renamed the Madison Small Scholarship; and
WHEREAS, the scholarship will be awarded annually to former AGSL players, who have demonstrated sportsmanship, citizenship and commitment to the game of softball that results in a positive impact on their own development and AGSL as a whole; and
WHEREAS, there was a Board Initiated Action Item requesting that the two softball fields at Trailside Park be renamed
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, on March 17, 2016, the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors hereby name softball fields #1 and #2 at Trailside Park, “The Madison Small Softball Complex.”
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the resolution be placed within the official records of Loudoun County.”
