Leesburg (March 30th, 2014) – Calling all freaks! This past weekend, Belmont Ridge Middle School’s white cast has put on Shrek the Musical and has done spectacular. They have performed the story of fairy tales with a twist and put their own sassy spin on it.
“The original Broadway version has the Three Little Pigs as guys but we incorporate it as sassy girls,” said Kate Harwood, who acted as one of the Three Little Pigs and one of the Three Blind Mice.
Shrek the Musical is all about an ogre named Shrek who wakes up one day and finds that his swamp is being overrun by the “freaks” of Duloc. He sets out to find the ruler of Duloc and meets a donkey, which accompanies him along the way. They meet Lord Farquaad and they tell him to give Shrek his swamp back. In order to reclaim his swamp, Shrek has to embark on a quest to save Princess Fiona from a dragon-guarded tower and bring her back to Lord Farquaad. The quest turns out to give Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona a few unexpected surprises.
This musical is perfect for all ages with jokes spanning all age groups and characters that can relate to everyone. Belmont Ridge was able to incorporate some modern pop culture in the show, so look out for “Sharkeisha.” The vocals of the leads surprised me with how finely they were tuned and how well they harmonized. Over all, this musical was spectacular.
This weekend, Shrek the Musical featured Jeyhan Turker as Shrek, Noah Hamadé as Donkey, Sarah Katherine Lawless as Princess Fiona and Kyle Broderick as Lord Farquaad. Other supporting roles included Max Brotman, Jack Drennan, Ben Svoboda, Julianna Pesak, Michaela Frames, Alex Yi, Sydney Brazile, Gavin Stone, Jack Darnell, Bennett Kaufman, Kara Palumbo, Arie Hamadé, Kate Harwood, Sara Howorth, Lindsey McDonald, and Brigid Randolph.
Jason Paul Augustowski is the director and choreographer for both weeks, with Sharon Lanham as the assistant director. Janice Palumbo and Kristie McDonald are the executive producers and Jill Kerr is the vocal director.
Shrek the Musical continues this week, with performances by the red cast on April 3, 4 and 5.
