Glen Allen, Va. (July 19, 2014) – The Jefferson Cup, an elite youth soccer tournament hosted by the Richmond Strikers Soccer Club, has opened its online application system for the 2015 edition.
With 461 girls teams and 401 boys teams from 35 states having been accepted to compete in the 2014 tournament, the Strikers are expecting another large turnout in March 2015. Jefferson Cup Tournament Director John Faircloth said that opening applications well in advance is out of convenience for teams who want work ahead in their administrative process.
“At the Strikers, we know the value of being able to map out a busy playing schedule as early as possible, so we want to be accommodating,” Faircloth said. “We are excited for another slate of quality teams at the Jefferson Cup in 2015, and are already looking forward to next March.”
At the 2015 tournament, boys U10 through U15 age groups will play on March 7 and 8 (Saturday andSunday), while the U16 through U19 competition runs March 6-8 (Friday-Sunday).
For the first time ever in 2015, the girls side will be expanded to two weekends. The U10 to U14 Girls Weekend will take place March 14-15 (Saturday and Sunday), and the U15 to U19 Girls Showcase Weekend runs from March 20-22 (Friday-Sunday).
The Jefferson Cup Girls Weekend is the number one tournament in the country according to GotSoccer.com’s combined rankings system, and the boys side is perennially among the top 10 in the nation as well. Each year the tournament draws an average of over 150 State Cup Champions, 10 Regional Champions and five National Champions throughout the nine age groups.
Over 500 total college coaches between the girls and boys sides from all divisions annually attend the tournament to scout the showcase levels. The Jefferson Cup is consistently one of the top recruiting events on the East Coast.
The tournament not only features some of the top teams and college coaches in the country, but also some of the best natural grass fields. The 2015 Jefferson Cup will once again be played on pristine grass fields at facilities such as Striker Park, West Creek and others.
In the event of inclement weather, the Jefferson Cup will have access to a total of 24 turf back-up fields, virtually ensuring full tournament play. This includes 12 fields at the state-of-the art River City Sportsplex.
