Aldie, VA (May 30, 2017) – No matter what the sport, pairing two Loudoun teams in regional playoffs is sure to be a good matchup. The host John Champe Knights had a slightly better record–and higher seed–then the visiting Woodgrove Wolverines, but not by much.
Chas Sumser, Viva Loudoun photographer, was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
The lower seed didn’t matter as the Wolverines jumped in front with an early, and surprising, goal by Dalani Stephens. They held on to that lead for several minutes, but the Champe pressure was building.
Awarded a penalty Kick, the Knights’ Lindie Gibbs slotted a shot into the lower left corner to tie it up. It looked like that score would hold into halftime, but Champe scored with under a minute to play to take a 2-1 lead at the break.
When play resumed it was all John Champe. Woodgrove could muster few potent attacks while the Knights were pushing forward at every opportunity. Speed up front, exemplified by Champe’s Ally Bartlett on the right side, kept the Wolverines on their heels for the next forty minutes. Three goals later, the Knights were on their way to the semifinals.
Final score: John Champe 5 – Woodgrove 1.
