South Riding, VA (May 31, 2016) – Highly-rated all season, the Woodgrove Wolverines entered Olsen stadium a second seed in the 4A West Regional tournament, but still the favorite. Could the Freedom Eagles, in front of a raucous home crowd, carry over their momentum from their conference championship match? Chas Sumser was there to cover the action and posted a gallery of 90 images.
Final Score: Freedom 12 – Woodgrove 11
At first the answer was “no.” Woodgrove scored early and often to take a 4-1 lead, but the Eagles battled back to tie it at 4-4 as the first quarter ended. That surge continued as Freedom completely controlled the second quarter and took an 8-5 lead into halftime. But Woodgrove was far from finished and shut down Freedom in the third period while regaining the lead, 9-8.
The Wolverines extended their lead to 10-8, and with time winding down it looked like they were on their way to the regional final. But Freedom tied it up, 10-10, only to see Woodgrove get the lead back one more time. With just seconds remaining, the Eagles scored again to send the game to overtime.
One overtime complete, still tied. Two overtimes complete, still tied. In the third overtime, Freedom finally found the net and their ticket to the championship tilt against top-seeded Dominion.
