Ashburn, VA (Nov. 6, 2015) – The Tucarora High School Huskies visited the Broad Run High School Spartans for a highly-anticipated match up between two highly-rated Loudoun County schools. A capacity crowd, senior night, and a “pink out” combined to make the unseasonably mild conditions surreal. Chas Sumser captured the atmosphere and action on Friday, November 6, posting this photo gallery of 192 images.
On the very first play from scrimmage, Tuscarora quarterback Daniel Smith lofted a tight spiral far down the sidelines. The pass fell incomplete, but remember that play because it would become important later. The Huskies then proceeded to march down the field to score and take the only lead they would have in the first half. Once they had the ball, Broad Run scored immediately on a halfback option, recovered a Tuscarora fumble, and then scored again to take a lead that they would maintain until the end, well, almost.
Both teams were able to score at will throughout the game, but Tuscarora could not regain the edge on the scoreboard. Each time they scored, the Spartans came right back and scored again. With time running out in the fourth quarter, Broad Run held a six-point lead and lined up for the game clinching field goal. But the kick was blocked giving the Huskies new life with about 1:30 to go.
And then came the long sideline pass–only this time it was caught for a huge gain. A few plays later the visitors were in the end zone and, after the kick, had the lead back again, finally. Broad Run had one last chance, but was stopped by the Tuscarora defense leaving the raucous home sidelines in stunned silence. Final score, Tuscarora 43 – Broad Run 42.
