Ashburn (May 26, 2015) – Chas Sumser photographed the Tuscarora High School vs. Broad Run High School Conference 14 girls soccer championship match on Tuesday, May 26 and posted this photo gallery with 57 images.
The top-seeded Spartans controlled play in the first half, but Tuscarora was up for the challenge sending away every attempt. All Conference goalkeeper Courtenay Kaplan was simply outstanding with an excellent defense in front of her. Broad Run was equally strong and thwarted the Husky attack often before it entered the Spartan defensive third. Thus, the score was tied at halftime, 0-0.
But as has happened often this season, Broad Run attacker Steph Stahl calmly scored midway through the second half. There was plenty of time remaining, but the Tuscarora team hadn’t really put much pressure on the Spartan goal. But with eleven minutes remaining they did just that scoring off a beautiful penetrating pass and a nifty move around Broad Run keeper, Maddy Kopecky.
So it looked like the game was headed to overtime. With four minutes remaining, after a lengthy delay for an injury to Kaplan which removed her from the game, two throw-ins into the Husky penalty area went wanting until Maile Fujimoto was able to volley one over her head and just under the bar for the winning tally, 2-1. Both teams advance to the regionals.
