Fredricksburg, VA (November 29, 2015) – The Stone Bridge Bulldogs(8-4) kept grinding away to get the come from behind win in the fourth quarter with seconds left against the undefeated Massaponax Panthers (12-0) last Friday night. The Bulldogs made several dramatic moments in the second half to come from behind, a 20-point deficit, to steal their 5A North Semi-final victory away from the Panthers in a wild 50-49 finish with single-digit seconds remaining on the clock. Joe Thompson (4), kept the ball from the snap in the single-wing and looked straight ahead, but veered right and lunged at the orange TD pylon with both his arms extended and he made the 2-point conversion. Thompson and his teammates were extremely focused and you could tell it in his eyes that he had only one goal, get the ball over the goal line!
The Bulldogs had a total team effort through the work of four-headed monster, Chase Ridley (1), Joshua Breece (20), Dewayne Winston (7), and Thompson and the entire Bulldogs offense and defense and special teams. They were all on the same page in the second half and it showed because there were multiple play-makers that gave their all in contributing to the team win.
The Bulldog defense was on fire and stopped a Massaponax rusher in his tracks and Bulldog Linebacker Coach, Brian Slay, was so thrilled he galloped 30-yards down the Bulldog sidelines towards the end zone jumping up and down all the way with sheer exuberance and happiness that his guys made a key stop. Wow, he was fired up!
Part of the magic that happened in the second half included the Bulldogs special team kicker, Tyler Alcorn. Alcorn made three onside kicks and two of which were successfully recovered by the Bulldogs. This led to the Bulldogs putting their scoring drives in high gear. After Ridley, scored his first touchdown in the third-quarter, he said “There’s more gas left in the tank!” And, boy was there… He went on to score another TD in the quarter with 22-yd pass from Thompson and took it to the house.
The Bulldogs (9-4) advance to the VHSL 5A North Region Finals on Friday, December 4th at 7PM against the Tuscarora Huskies (13-0) at Tuscarora High School in Leesburg, VA.
