South Riding (May 20, 2015) – Chas Sumser photographed the Stone Bridge High School vs. Freedom High School boys and girls soccer matches on Wednesday, May 20 and posted two photo galleries:
Hosting two games as the higher seed in the Conference 14 playoffs was a big deal for the Freedom Eagles, and you could feel the excitement in the air. The potential for advancing was right there for the taking.
In the girls match, having traveled all the way to the 2014 state final, the Stone Bridge Bulldogs had the advantage of experience on their side. They had the better of play throughout the match, but couldn’t put one past the excellent Eagle defense and superior play from keeper Kylee Moffett. The Stone Bridge defense was equally impenetrable, and into overtime the two teams went knotted at 0-0. In the first extra period, a Bulldog cross was up for grabs, and it looked like Moffett had it, but the ball came loose and Amy Thompson finished for the win.
The boys match was equally taught in the first half. Freedom scored first and was brimming with confidence, but three second half markers by the Bulldogs created an unbeatable margin of victory, 3-1.
