It’s Homecoming, and the Falcons have arrived
Brambleton, VA (September 9, 2016) – An hour before game time the Homecoming stands at Briar Woods were filling up fast. Clad in orange, the Falcon fans were in an early frenzy. As the home team burst through the end zone banner, a “crush” was on the menu.
Chas Sumser, Viva Loudoun photographer, was there to capture the action and emotion and posted this gallery of images from the event.
In the first half, an orange crush was on the menu alright, but the South Lakes Seahawks were doing the ordering, and the Falcons quickly and dramatically fell behind. Although an initial long bomb was called back, the visitors engineered a fast-paced offense into three touchdowns. Briar Woods could only muster one of their own, and a failed extra point made the halftime score 21-6.
It should be no surprise that the Falcons came out strong after intermission. They quickly cut the lead to just seven points, but heading into the fourth quarter they still trailed by a touchdown.
With about eight minutes remaining, the Seahawks were driving to what would surely be the clinching score. But, miraculously, Briar Woods’ Ben Maffe scooped up a fumble and returned it 80 yards to tie the score.
All the momentum seemed to have switched back to the Falcons, but South Lakes was not fazed and sustained a beautiful 80-yard drive to make it 28-21 with four minutes to go. Briar Woods got close–and had several last ditch pass attempts in the final minutes–but in the end they were not quite close enough.
