Ashburn, VA (Feb 5, 2016) – The Rock Ridge Phoenix and the Riverside Rams–Loudoun County’s two newest high schools–met in a girls and boys varsity double header which marked the beginning of what is sure to be an ongoing rivalry as the programs mature.
In a game that was close from start to finish, the girls’s teams were tied at the end of both the first and second quarters. But the Rams, showing incredible grit, determination and poise for a team with no juniors or seniors, opened up a small lead and finished with a rare win, 34-28. Rock Ridge graduates just one senior this year and has only one junior so more iterations of this matchup could be huge in the years to come.
The boys’ game was intense and physical, to say the least, but the Phoenix maintained a steady edge throughout and won, 67-58. The visitors maintained a balanced scoring attack with contributions from guards Tommy Caldwell (3) and Justyn Tate (5) especially notable.
