Aldie (May 27, 2015) – Chas Sumser photographed the Rock Ridge High School vs. John Champe High School boys and girls Conference 28 semi-final soccer matches on Wednesday, May 27, and posted two photo galleries:
In the girls match, the Knights were a little slow to get started and the young Phoenix were giving their absolute best effort when a lightning delay interrupted the action. When the teams returned to play, John Champe was more charged up and scored two goals before halftime. After the break, it was all John Champe as they connected for three more goals to take a commanding 5-0 lead. Perhaps as a sign of better things to come, Rock Ridge scored a late goal to avoid the shutout and give them confidence headed to next season. Final score, 5-1.
John Champe will return to their home field on Friday, May 29, to host Loudoun Valley for the title match.
The nightcap was a different matter altogether. Both teams played aggressive attacking soccer throughout. While the Knights had the better chances, the Phoenix used their speed to stay right with home-standing John Champe. Tied at 0-0 at halftime, it was more of the same in the second half.
With just more than ten minutes remaining, Champe was awarded a penalty kick, but it was drilled off the crossbar and the score remained the same. Shortly after that, a second penalty was awarded and this time Will Donohoe made no mistake. Now leading 1-0, the Knights went into defensive mode and Rock Ridge went on the attack. The maroon-clad Phoenix nearly had it, too, but their best chance sailed over and wide. Final score, 1-0.
John Champe boys will head to William Monroe on Friday, May 29, for the title match.
