Ashburn, VA (May 12, 2017) – With seniors on their team for the first time, the Rock Ridge Phoenix was about to cap off a solid season entering the game at 8-5. In front of them were the undefeated Riverside Rams–with no seniors at all–and who, at 13-0, were looking to finish undefeated. Could Rock Ridge be a spoiler, or would Riverside end with a clean slate?
Chas Sumser, Viva Loudoun photographer, was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Well, it became pretty clear, pretty quickly that the latter was going to be true. The Rams shot out of the gate with five goals before the Phoenix could score one. And the lead built from there to an insurmountable halftime margin for Riverside at 12-1.
Give Rock Ridge credit for maintaining possession for a major chunk of the second half. As they patiently held the ball looking for ways to score they simultaneously kept the Rams from getting much time in the offensive zone. Unfortunately, those long possessions did not lead to much scoring as the Riverside defense remained stingy.
Final score: Riverside 13 – Rock Ridge 2.
