Leesburg, VA (May 24, 2016) – As it should be, the top two teams from the regular season advanced to the 2016 Conference 21B championship game. Top-seeded Heritage’s path was surprisingly tough as they beat a plucky Loudoun County squad, 4-3, while Park View more easily defeated Rock Ridge, 5-0.
No matter, they’re in the final now and both previous meetings between the two contenders ended in narrow, one-goal victories for the Pride. Chas Sumser was there to cover the action and posted a gallery of 125 images.
Final Score: Park View 3 – Heritage 1
They say it’s hard to beat a team three times in one season. Heritage looked confident to start, but so did the Patriots as most of the first half was played even. But then, just as halftime began to approach, Park View’s Rember Garcia found the back of the net off of beautiful pass from Obdulio Funez. The Patriots led at halftime, 1-0.
Early in the second half, Park View’s momentum continued, but the Pride’s Nick Scola scored on a header to tie the game. For most of the rest of the game, the two teams challenged each other with neither getting any brilliant chances, and it seemed like the game was headed to overtime. Suddenly, with under five minutes remaining, Funez and German Gonzalez scored within a minute of each other to put the game out of reach and the championship in Park View’s hands.
