Fairfax, VA (June 11, 2016) – As the final representative from Loudoun County high schools, the Tuscarora Huskies girls soccer team was one of the eight in all sports that made it all the way to the 2016 VHSL championship game. Their opponent, the feisty Mills Godwin Eagles, were waiting. Chas Sumser was there to cover the action and posted a gallery of 160 images.
Final Score: Mills Godwin 4 – Tuscarora 3
Shaking off a solid, but non-spectacular semi-final performance, Tuscarora got going early on a goal from Madison Sheehan just five minutes into the game. Some in attendance even thought that one goal might just be enough for Tuscarora given the fact that Courtenay Kaplan, first team All-Met, was in goal.
But the Eagles had other ideas. On a free kick from about twenty yards out, Godwin’s Sara Puglisi punched a shot that deflected off the Tuscarora wall and past Kaplan. The score remained 1-1 at the halftime break.
Given the tight play of the first half, more of the same was expected when the next period began. However, in rapid sequence the two teams combined for four goals in a five-minute span knotting the score at 3-3. During that time, Godwin’s Paige Franks scored on two penalty kicks just a minute apart. Suddenly, both teams looked dangerous from anywhere on the field and the pace of play was fast and furious. Kaplan and the Eagles’ Eliza Himmel were up to the challenge, however, and neither let in another goal as the teams moved into overtime.
The stalemate continued into the first overtime period, but Franks scored again to give the Eagles the only lead they would need. Tuscarora searched for another opportunity, but when the second overtime ended, they had not find the back of the net. The championship belonged to Mills Godwin.
