Purcellville, VA (March 31, 2017) – It wasn’t that long ago when any sporting event featuring the Loudoun Valley Vikings and the Loudoun County Raiders would be a big deal. Whenever two of the original LCPS schools played, you knew it was a rivalry game, but now each team has at least one cross-town rival in their own backyard.
But, under a constant threat of cold rain on an early spring Friday evening, the boys lacrosse teams renewed that rivalry and played out a thriller.
Chas Sumser, Viva Loudoun photographer, was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
The first period belonged to the visiting Raiders. Possession was largely theirs and it paid off giving Loudoun County the early 2-0 lead. But momentum flip-flopped in the second quarter, and the Vikings cut the lead in half in front of a shivering home crowd. It was 2-1, Raiders, at halftime.
County opened up the second half with two quick goals, and it looked like they were finally going to pull away, but Valley fought back and kept it close the rest of the way only to fall just short at the final whistle.
Final score: Loudoun County 7 – Loudoun Valley 5.
