Leesburg, VA (May 20, 2016) – Following a huge win on penalties, the Loudoun County Raiders travelled to Heritage High School for a Conference 21B semi-final matchup with the top-seeded Pride. The Raiders were on the short end of both regular season meetings between the two teams, but they carried the momentum from their quarterfinal win into this match. Chas Sumser was there to cover the action and posted a gallery of 84 images.
Final Score: Heritage 4 – Loudoun County 3
Although the final score of this game would match the final score of the girls game played earlier in the evening, this one was far different. The underdog Raiders’ Alden Cizmic scored quickly, just two minutes in, on a Heritage defensive miscue to stun the heavily favored Pride. Heritage bounced back and dominated the rest of the first half, but held only a slim 2-1 margin at the break.
Possession was equal for the first twenty minutes of the second half, but then the excitement began as Kosta Nika scored his second goal of the game and seemed to seal the deal for Heritage at 3-1. Loudoun County wasn’t giving up, however, and Ben Mackey’s penalty kick made the deficit just one goal with over ten minutes remaining, 3-2.
Michael Diehl scored for the Pride seemingly putting the game out of reach–again–at 4-2, but Adduson Carson scored in extra time to bring the margin back to one goal once more, 4-3. Time ran out, Heritage breathed a sigh of relief, and the Pride advanced to the Conference 21B championship match.
