Falls Church (June 2, 2015) – On an unseasonably cool and damp evening, the Broad Run High School softball team traveled to face a talented George Marshall nine for a 5A North quarterfinal matchup. Chas Sumser photographed the game on Tuesday, June 2, and posted this photo gallery with 72 images.
The Statesmen took an early lead–scoring a well-manufactured run in the first inning–and held it for three full innings. But that was just the amount of time the Spartans needed to take full measure of the Marshall pitcher, and they finally broke through with two runs driven in by pitcher Becca Tatara in the top of the fourth inning.
The Broad Run lead lasted for just one inning as Marshall scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead back for good. The Spartans had two more at bats, but could not plate the run that they needed and headed home having reached the culmination of a heartbreaking and unforgettable season.
