Ashburn (Sept. 25, 2015) – The Broad Run High School Spartans visited the Briar Woods High School Falcons for the 2015 Battle for a Better Cause. This year’s game was played in memory of Broad Run’s Madison Small, who passed away suddenly last April. Both teams wanted it bad. The Spartans scored first, taking a slim 7-0 lead, but the Falcons answered with a touchdown of their own at the outset of the second quarter. The teams traded fields goals to go into the halftime locker room tied at 10-10. The Spartans took another 7-point lead, and the Falcons answered again. Broad Run retook the lead after Briar Woods lost an unlucky fumble near their own goal line and the line now read 24-17, Spartans.
Although Briar Woods trailed, the game’s trend suggested overtime was coming. But, Broad Run’s Meech Hembry suddenly broke off a long scoring run that created a 31-17 margin. The Falcons scored again to slice the lead in half, but Broad Run prevailed to win, 31-24.
