Ashburn (June 3, 2015) – Chas Sumser photographed the girls and boys Region 5A North semi-final soccer matches on Wednesday, June 3, and posted two photo galleries:
In the first match, Broad Run’s usual patience and efficiency was on full display. Stuart’s defense was as well-organized as it gets, but the Spartans commanded the midfield and their own defensive third. The Raiders rarely mustered a shot yet they held Broad Run scoreless at halftime. When play resumed the Spartans struck quickly and then again midway through the second half to win, 2-0.
The nightcap began at a blistering pace, and Broad Run had something to prove after losing three two-goal leads in the last meeting between these two teams. Both sides were aggressive, but the Spartans made it count with three goals in the first 25 minutes.
The Falcons got back into the game with a goal of their own, but were down 3-1 at halftime. From the second half whistle until the final moments, Briar Woods controlled play. Ten minutes in, they cut the lead to one and then pressured the Spartan goal with multiple corner kicks and long throws into the penalty area. But no more finishes materialized through the steady, but light rain, and Broad Run held on for the win, 3-2.
With the victories, both Broad Run teams will play in the region finals on Friday, June 5, and qualified for the state tournament.
