Leesburg, VA (February 23, 2017) – As the 2017 regional tournaments near conclusion there are no longer any heavy favorites. The remaining teams are just too good.
For this game, the Tuscarora Huskies had the home court, but that’s where their advantage ended. The visiting Wakefield Warriors had earned every right to play, too, and one of them would be headed to the regional championship game.
Chas Sumser, Viva Loudoun photographer, was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
Owning the court in the first period, the Warriors came out fighting. They quickly marched to a 9-2 lead, but the Huskies were able to claw their way back and closed the gap to four points by the end of the first period.
A power surge by the home team–even without much help from Satreen Hendi who found herself in foul trouble early–evened the score by halftime at 23-23.
The third quarter opened with Tuscarora gaining their first lead of the game. It was short-lived, however, as Wakefield was not to be denied.
As the final quarter began it was anyone’s game at 36-34, Warriors ahead. And then their stifling defense kicked in giving the Huskies few open shots the rest of the way. Tuscarora put Wakefield on the foul line multiple times in the waning minutes, but the Warriors were good enough from the stripe to solidify the final advantage.
Final score: Wakefield 47 – Tuscarora 39.
