Leesburg, VA (February 21, 2017) – Thomas Jefferson had to upset Albemarle to even make it to the 5A North quarterfinal round. Tuscarora, on the other hand, was already there by way of a top seed in the region. On paper, this looked like an easy matchup for the host Huskies.
Chas Sumser, Viva Loudoun photographer, was there to capture the action and emotion and posted a gallery of images from the game.
But that wasn’t to be the case as the Colonials scrapped and clawed their way through the game and stayed close all the way. In fact, the visitors hit a big three-point shot to take the lead at the halftime buzzer.
With less than a minute remaining in the break, the Huskies were still not on the court. But whatever was going on in the locker room paid off as the Huskies came out and immediately took the lead back. Jefferson went ahead one more time, but Kennedy Middleton would have none of it and led the way to victory with 24 points.
Even so, the outcome was not fully in hand until the final minutes when the Huskies repeatedly and calmly sank their free throws to hold on and advance to the region semi-finals and a spot in the state tournament.
Final score: Tuscarora 46 – Thomas Jefferson 42.
