Burke (June 12-13, 2015) – In high heat, the Broad Run High School and Stone Bridge High school girls soccer teams marched to a state championship match. Chas Sumser photographed the semi-final and final games on Friday and Saturday, June 12-13, and posted three photo galleries:
In the first match, under steamy conditions, Broad Run freshman Kailey Shannon opened the scoring and gave the Spartans a 1-0 halftime lead. That margin looked like it might hold up, but Godwin’s Taylor Guy broke away and scored late in the second half and forced overtime. In the extra period, All-Met player of the year Caroline Kerns notched the game winner, on an assist from sister Emma Kerns, and sent the Spartans to the title game.
In the second match, Stone Bridge was not to be outdone and staked a two-goal halftime lead on tallies from Kayla Valle and Amy Thompson, but Maury fought back just minutes into the second half cutting the lead to one. Stone Bridge scored again, but so did Maury and the final minutes were tense and taught. The Bulldogs held on to the 3-2 lead and arranged a repeat of the 5A North regional final for the state title.
The championship pitted cross-town rivals agains each other and saw Stone Bridge in the final for the second year in a row. But the Spartans were the stronger side on this day and three goals by Kara Kimberl, Sara Deutsch and Emma Kerns sealed the deal. Broad Run wins the state championship, 3-0.
