Burke (June 12-13, 2015) – After the girls semi-finals were complete, the Broad Run High School and Tuscarora High school boys soccer teams battled opponents of their own for a spot in the state championship. Chas Sumser photographed the semi-final and final games on Friday and Saturday, June 12-13, and posted three photo galleries:
In the first match, under steamy late afternoon conditions that turned to an early evening rain delay, Broad Run all-met player of the year Abu Koroma gave the Spartans a 1-0 halftime lead. Second half goals by Koroma and fellow all-met Karim Zebdi were more than enough to put away the outmatched Princess Anne side and send the Spartans on to the title game.
The Tuscarora boys were not so lucky as they met up against an extremely determined and physical team from Mills Godwin. In a game that started almost two hours late, Godwin scored quickly and again to make the first half score 2-0. The Huskies pulled within one with a goal from Justin Gates, but Godwin’s Will Selden nailed a free kick to put this one out of reach. Final score, 3-1.
In an extremely even championship match, Broad Run and Godwin played nearly seventy minutes of scoreless soccer. But then, in a flash, the visiting Eagles scored twice and held on for the title by a 2-0 margin. Tommy Kinnick was the man of the match with an assist on the first goal and an unassisted goal of his own just minutes later.
