Loudoun County, Va. (January 31, 2015) – Six Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS) middle school students have been honored locally by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay Contest for the 2014-15 school year.
Each year more than 100,000 students in grades six through eight enter this contest. The first-place winner from each state competes to win one of 46 national awards totaling $46,000.
The theme of this year’s essay was “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans.” Each of the essays had to be 300 to 400 words.
The LCPS winners represent essays submitted to VFW Post 1177 in Leesburg.
These winners are:
- First place: Sahar Choudhury, Harper Park Middle School
- Second place: Victoria B. Lopez, Sterling Middle School
- Third place: Ali Muhammad Shah, Sterling Middle School
Honorable Mentions: Elizabeth Bernice Baucom, River Bend Middle School; Lindsay B. Bowman, Harper Park Middle School; Luis Diaz, Sterling Middle School.
