Ashburn, VA (April 24, 2017) – Northern Virginia Volleyball Association (NVVA) is excited to announce the visit of Pedro Paulo Costa (Pepê), head coach of the Qatar beach volleyball national team during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Starting on April 29th, Pepê will run an invite-only super camp for girls age 14-19, an open registration camp for boys age 14-19 and an open registration U15 clinic. Pepê will train and show players the strategies and techniques that helped the Qatar national team to their first ever Olympics participation, beating top-ranked teams in the world to a 9th place finish.
Pedro Paulo Costa (Pepê) has been coaching beach volleyball since 1999. Under Brazilian coach Antonio Leāo, he was part of the coaching staff of the Japanese team Takahashi/ Teru Saiki that finished in fourth place in the 2000 Sydney Olympic games.
In 2001, Pepê was the assistant coach to the under 21 world champion Brazilian team Maria Clara and Shaylyn. He was the coach of various Brazilian professional teams that have had remarkable appearances in the Brazilian national beach volleyball tour and South American beach volleyball tour.
In 2011, Pepê was named the supervisor of the Brazilian Beach Volleyball National Confederation, helping the Brazilian teams win a world cup and world tour title in both men’s and women’s.
In 2013, Pepê was the coach and coordinator of the Paraguayan Beach Volleyball Development Project and their beach volleyball national team. That year, Paraguay earned a fifth place finish in the South American Professional Tour rankings leading to a qualification to play in the Professional World Championships. Under Pepê, Paraguay also ranked first in the Youth South American Tour qualifying to the Youth Olympic Games for the first time in the country’s history,
In 2014, Pepê took the lead in the Qatar “road to Rio 2016” project with the task of qualifying the country for its first Olympic games in Beach Volleyball. The team qualified to the games with a historical 9th place finish becoming one of the biggest surprises of the Olympic games.
