Leesburg, VA (December 8, 2014) – Prior to the start of the 2014 football season, I stopped four Tuscarora football players and asked them a question. Part rhetorical and part whimsical, “who’s your starting running back this season?”. In unison, three answered with the giddiness of Christmas, and the other with a ‘you-really-don’t-know stance?’.
Through 14 games Tuscarora High School running back, Noah Reimers, amassed a whopping 2,886 yards and 47 touchdowns in helping his team reach the VHSL 5A state football championship game at the University of Virginia (UVA) on Saturday, December 13, 2014.
On December 4th, the VHSL Conference 14 Football Offensive Player of the Year, two-time All Conference 14 and two-time All Loudoun wrecking ball was recognized with yet another honor when he was crowned the 2014 Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year. Reimers joins the likes of Emmitt Smith, Payton Manning, and fellow Virginian Terry Kirby (Tabb High School) in receiving such an honor. Gatorade State Players of the Year are selected based on athletic production and impact on the field of play. Each winner also demonstrates high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.
After Tuscarora’s 41-21 state-semifinal thumping of the Massaponax Panthers, I caught the Harvard-bound running back and asked him a question many would expect to hear on super bowl media day. Since I maintained both eye contact and our handshake, he realized I really did want to know the flavor of his favorite Gatorade.
If the Huskies are successful in claiming the state title at UVA, and a post game ice bucket bath is in order, let’s be sure that bucket is filled with the answer to the aforementioned question, that Reimers responded to with a smirk and a smile, “Coooooool Blue.”
