Ashburn, VA (June 3, 2015) – In April 2015, the softball community suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Broad Run High School senior captain Madison Small. Madison was a four-year varsity softball player for the Spartans. Like so many other softball players, Madison began her softball career in the Ashburn Girls Softball League (AGSL) 8U house division. As Madison began to develop her softball skills, she moved on to play for the AGSL Pride program and eventually the Ashburn Shooting Stars. During her travel softball career, she also played for the Vienna Stars, Baseliners and Glory softball programs.
In honor of Madison’s contributions to the softball community and her impact with the Ashburn Girls Softball League, the annual AGSL Scholarship was renamed the Madison Small Scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to former AGSL players that have demonstrated sportsmanship, citizenship and commitment to the game of softball that results in a positive impact on their own development and AGSL as a whole. This is precisely the type of player that Madison was.
This October, the AGSL is hosting the Madison Small Scholarship Tournament. Funds raised from tournament participation will go towards this annual scholarship that will be awarded to deserving high school seniors in Madison’s name.
In addition to the October scholarship tournament, AGSL is hosting another event in Madison’s honor on Friday, June 19th. The tournament is intended for high school and collegiate-age athletes that have competed on the same field of play as Madison.
Friends of Madison were so inspired by the community support and coming together of players from so many different teams, that they wanted to host an event where they could play with others outside their own high school and travel organizations. There is no cost to participate, but a limited number of players will be accepted. Priority will be given to pitchers, catchers and friends of Madison. AGSL and Friends are hoping to field four teams and play two double-headers at Trailside Park in Ashburn on Friday, June 19th. Donations will be accepted for the Madison Small Scholarship both at the event and through AGSL. Upon registration, players will be placed on a team by the organizers. Eligible players can register via the following link: June 19th Madison Small Scholarship Tournament Registration.
