Loudoun County, VA (June 23, 2015) – The Loudoun Salvation Army Teams With The Catoctin School Of Music For “Tools For Schools”
For the fifth year, the Catoctin School of Music in Leesburg is volunteering to help the Loudoun Salvation Army provide backpacks stuffed with school supplies for next year’s students in Loudoun County.
Applications to receive the free backpacks will be available at the Loudoun Salvation Army, 10 Cardinal Park Drive in Leesburg on July 7 through July 10. Hours are 11am – 6pm on Wednesday and Thursday, and 9am – 3pm on Tuesday and Friday. Applications will then be reviewed by the Salvation Army to determine need.
According to Jennene Estes, one of the founders of the school who also teaches at the Loudoun School for the Gifted, in 2013 they stuffed 468 backpacks, but the number dropped to around 350 last year. “The need was still there, but we didn’t have as many donations to put in the backpacks.”
Estes went on to say that anyone interested in donating school supplies can drop them off at the Loudoun Salvation Army or the Catoctin School of Music, 25 East First Street in Leesburg. For elementary school students they’re looking for glue sticks, Crayola crayons, washable markers, blunt scissors, composition notebooks, notebook paper, #2 pencils, erasers, highlighters and two-pocket folders.
For middle and high school students they need index cards, highlighters, pencils and pens, college-ruled spiral notebooks, loose-leaf binders, pocket folders, subject dividers, Post-its, colored pencils, erasers, and college-ruled notebook paper. The Salvation Army of Loudoun County will provide the backpacks.
“Last year I had forty to fifty students helping me over a three-day period to sort and pack the supplies in the backpacks,” Estes said. “We try to teach community involvement at our school as well as music, so the Tools for School program provides a unique opportunity for our students to help other students who might not be as fortunate as they are.”
