(Feb. 4, 2014) – Briar Woods High School senior Michael Hulcher has committed to wrestle for the Virginia Military Institute beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year.
On Jan. 11, Hulcher wrestled at the Freedom Invitational where he picked up his 164th career win making him the winningest wrestler in Loudoun County Public School’s history.
“I am motivated by personal pride. I push myself so that I will win,” Hulcher said. “Seeing my hard work pay off also motivates me to continue training and pursue a college career.”
In college, Hulcher will suit up in red, white and yellow and wrestle for the Division I Keydets at VMI.
“I chose VMI because of the connections I see between all of the cadets and alumni I have met,” the 5-foot-6 Hulcher said. “My brother graduated from VMI class of 2013, and I got to see the level of academics and the bond he has made with all of his classmates.”
Hulcher noted that VMI being a military institute just added to the attractiveness of the Lexington-based school.
“The environment creates honest people and teaches dedication to all of the students, and as I said before the military aspect adds to the bond that you make with your classmates.”
The Keydets have gotten off to a slow start this season sitting at 3-12 overall and 1-3 in the Big South Conference. Hulcher will look to add to the VMI team right away in the 132-pound weight class.
“I hope to add a hardworking go-and-get them attitude to the Keydet team,” Hulcher said. “I like to work and wrestle hard, and I want everyone else to as well.”
Unlike the Keydets, Briar Woods wrestling team is hitting their stride as Hulcher has pinned opponent after opponent adding to his record 178 career wins and 103 career pins. Hulcher is also the reigning VHSL AA state champion in the 126-pound weight class.
“My expectations for the team are to continue pulling in wins and wrestling hard,” Hulcher said. “My expectation is to keep working hard for another state championship this year.”
