Loudoun County, Va. (December 19, 2014) – This holiday season, the Loudoun County Mental Health, Substance Abuse and Developmental Services (MHSADS) Prevention/ Intervention team is once again partnering with Loudoun County Girl Scouts and the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office to provide gifts and other resources to families throughout Loudoun County. The program, “Project Elf,” was developed six years ago by Bethann Laign, then Service Unit Manager of Girl Scouts Unit 70-9 in Leesburg.
The Girl Scouts of Loudoun County Service Unit 70 have worked during this holiday season adopting the families currently receiving case management services through MHSADS Prevention/ Intervention. This year, the number of troops participating to provide holiday gifts and clothing for each family member has increased to over 100. Each troop has either adopted one family, or in some cases, two troops have shared in the adoption of a larger family.
Loudoun Girl Scouts have been busy wrapping each gift, then dropping them off at the Mental Health Center in Leesburg.
“This will be the Girl Scouts’ sixth year of “Project Elf,” which was a huge success last year serving 100 families. This year, with the generosity and hard work of the Girl Scouts and their leaders, “Project Elf” will reach out to another 100 families,” said Judith Romberg, Prevention & Intervention Program Manager for Loudoun County.
MHSADS Prevention/Intervention staff members are in the process of delivering all the gifts, clothing and food to each of the families before the holidays. With the increasing number of families in need, MHSADS Prevention/Intervention staff will again partner with the Sheriff’s Office for additional help with deliveries. Sheriff’s deputies who have worked with the Prevention/Intervention staff on other projects, such as Camp REAL (Raising Education, Achievement and Leadership), will assist staff delivering the gifts donated by the scouts.
