Ashburn (May 29, 2014) – Loudoun-based, Viva Loudoun Media Communications LLC, announced today that it is has purchased the popular local media brand Viva Loudoun (www.vivaloudoun.com) from Viva Loudoun publisher and founder, Dan Sousa. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Viva Loudoun, founded in 2009, covers sports, news and views in Loudoun County, Va., one of the fastest growing and richest counties in the United States. Viva Loudoun’s website is on pace for more than 4 million page views this school year and the Viva Loudoun brand has one of the largest social media followings in Loudoun with nearly 9,000 followers on Twitter (@VivaLoudoun).
Sousa, who announced earlier this year that his family is relocating to Texas, said the top priority was to turn Viva Loudoun over to a Loudoun-based group that would nurture and grow the website and brand.
“The group purchasing Viva Loudoun is well-known to me as I have worked with them and been neighbors with them in Loudoun for many years. They understand how important Viva Loudoun’s coverage is to our community and will not only continue it but I expect they will expand the brand into new and exciting directions,” said Sousa.
Three of the four new owners — Steven Holland, Jeff Scudder and Aaron Wyche — know Viva Loudoun very well as they are currently freelance photographers for the website. Viva Loudoun, with a heavy concentration on high school athletics, has an archive of more than 200,000 professional quality photos as well as an archive of 10,000 local articles.
The fourth owner, Steve Tunney, is the president of the Ashburn Girls Softball League and Sousa’s next-door neighbor.
Jeff Scudder has lived in Northern Virginia 29 years, the last 14 in Loudoun County. He has two daughters who graduated from Broad Run High School and one currently at Stone Bridge. All three have played high school volleyball and Betsy Scudder was a JV and varsity coach for the Broad Run Spartans. Jeff has been a photographer for VivaLoudoun for the past five years.
“Dan created something special for the community with Viva Loudoun and we are looking forward to keeping it alive and growing,” said Scudder, who will act as Viva Loudoun’s new editor.
Steven Holland has lived in Loudoun County for the past 12 years and looks forward to many great years ahead. He and his wife Charlotte are proud parents of three teenagers, one son graduating from Stone Bridge High School this year and twins who will be rising freshmen in the 2014-2015 school year. Steve has been a photographer since the age of 16 starting in high school in California and professionally with Viva Loudoun for the past five years. He has a Bachelor’s degree with honors from Strayer University, concentration in Acquisition and Contract Management. Steve played football and baseball and has been involved in youth sports for over 25 years. His strong desire to motivate athletes through his photographs and provide images that allow parents to cherish the great work of their sons and daughters is what drives him.
“Being a part of the Viva Loudoun Team provides an opportunity to make a difference within Loudoun County,” said Holland.
Aaron Wyche grew up in Sterling and graduated from Park View when it was only one of four high schools in Loudoun County. Four years later he graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology. Five years ago Aaron started his own photography company, NOVA Sports Photo, and has been shooting for Viva Loudoun for the past 2 years. Aaron is the proud father of young two daughters whom often accompany him to events he photographs.
“When faculty, parents, and athletes share how fond they are of Viva Loudoun; I see its positive impact on the community,” said Wyche. “I am so looking forward to be a part of Viva Loudoun’s growth for years to come.”
Steve Tunney has been Dan’s next door neighbor for the last 18 years and is formerly the CEO of MCG Capital. Steve has been active in Loudoun county kid’s sports over the last 15 years as a father of four participants, a coach of soccer, hockey, baseball, basketball and softball teams and as the current President of Ashburn Girls Softball League. He also has served as the Chairman of the Finance Council of St. Theresa Catholic Church from 2003 to 2014.
