Loudoun County, Va. (February 17, 2015) – The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) reminds residents they have the option to file a crime report online at a time that is best for them without having to wait for a deputy to respond or call them back. The online crime reporting system should not be used in cases where it is an emergency or if the crime is in progress or just occurred. In those cases please call 911.
Residents can access the online crime reporting site at http://sheriff.loudoun.gov/
The online reporting system was unveiled in November 2012 as part of Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman’s goals to deliver Service, Technology, Efficiency, and Professionalism (STEP-UP) to the agency.
“Online reporting allows our deputies to remain on patrol and increase their presence in the community,” said Sheriff Chapman. “Residents can still ask to have a deputy respond to take a report or they can use the online reporting system to file a report at their convenience,” Sheriff Chapman added.
Since 2013, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office received over 4,100 online reports, saving deputies over 8,300 staff-hours, time they spend remaining on patrol. The program has also saved over a calculated $310,000. The monies saved are estimated based on time spent by a deputy on a typical call and the average hourly rate of a deputy.
The reportable online crime types include:
- Alcohol Violations
- Civil Disputes
- Credit Card Fraud
- Destruction of Property
- Fraud/False Pretenses
- Harassing Calls/Emails
- Identity Theft
- Theft From Vehicle
- Lost Property
- Narcotics Activity
- Suspicious Event/Circumstances
Loudoun residents utilizing the website can print a temporary copy of the report upon submitting the report. The report will be reviewed by LCSO personnel. Once approved, the filing person will receive an e-mail with a copy of the report attached at no cost. The report will transfer into the LCSO’s records management system and receive the same investigation and statistical analysis as if the report had been filed by a deputy.
