Ashburn, Va. (February 7, 2017) — Double-header? More like double-leader.
It’ll be a cavalcade of conference toppers tangled up in a hardcourt clash off Algonkian Parkway on Tuesday night, as the girls’ and boys’ hoops units for the Huskies of Tuscarora High School visit the Sterling Metro Region to encounter their counterparts, the homestanding Panthers of Potomac Falls High School.
It’ll be our chance to catch up with the two Conf-14 frontrunners just as they’re preparing for the playoffs – those magical and mad days of loud crowds, buzzer-beaters and one-and-dones, those crucial times when the true story of the season is really written.
For Tuscarora’s girls and the Panthers’ boys, promise aplenty is carried along with their lofty marks. Getting this late-season look for a post-season preview makes this twin-bill the ideal choice as Viva Loudoun’s Hottest Hoops Of The Week.
Tipping off the two-fer is the girls’ game, pitting the Panthers (8-13 overall, 2-5 in the conference) against the Huskies (16-4, 6-0). Potomac Falls has won four of its last six, including Monday’s defeat of Rock Ridge. The Huskies knocked off the Panthers 67-39 back on Jan. 24.
All four of Tuscarora’s setbacks were handed out by bigger Group 6A schools, while the Huskies’ve topped intra-conference foes five times by 20 points or more. In fact, they’re riding a 28-game in-conference win streak that dates all the way back to February 2014.
The boys are back for the nightcap. Potomac Falls (15-6, 6-1) sits in its customary position atop the standings, with its customary head coach – program founder Jeff Hawes – doing his customary stamp-dance on the sideline. Owning an eight-game win streak, they’ll seek to hold serve versus offensively potent Tuscarora (12-8, 3-3).
Last time out, the Huskies hung 90 on Briar Woods and scored 86 on Stone Bridge the game before that. (The game before that, the Panthers bested Tuscarora 93-68 on Jan. 24 in Leesburg.)
Let’s watch these teams in the regular season’s final week. Let’s watch for that playoff readiness and intensity. Let’s watch for the upset too. It’s a post-season atmosphere near the end of the regular season, and we’ll be there with the pics and stats and quotes and tweets for Viva Loudoun’s Hottest Hoops Of The Week @VivaLoudoun.
