Ashburn, Va. (February 23, 2017) — They don’t always save the best for last.
It’s only a Region 5A North semifinal tilt, and it’s not even a you-win-or-you’re-done situation – both the Panthers of Potomac Falls High School and the Panthers of Potomac High School have already inserted themselves into the upcoming Group 5A state tourney.
What it is, is a test – a mutual test between two talented basketball teams from two pedigree programs, each sizing up the other for the very real eventuality that they’ll soon meet again with statewide glory on the line…when it will be win-or-else.
What makes this Viva Loudoun Hottest Hoops Of The Week showdown a test, you ask? You mean, other than trying to tell Potomac Falls Panthers purple from Potomac Panthers navy blue?
This region semi is a test because it pits Sterling’s Panthers – 19-6, Conference 14 champs, winners of 13 straight – versus Dumfries’ Panthers – 21-2, Conference 15 champs, winners of 12 of their last 13 and defending their Group 5A state crown.
This will be a region semi unlike most region semis. These are two teams good enough to win states…but are they good enough to defeat each other?
Longtime program-building coaches Jeff Hawes and Keith Honore will play hardcourt chess with pieces like (for Potomac Falls) 6-foot-6 sophomore Ian Anderson, senior guard/forward David Walls and sharpshooting senior Brian Sweeney, all all-conference first-teamers; and like (for Potomac) senior center Nana Opoku, the Conference 15 Player of the Year, plus senior guards Ely Camp and Jamal Washington.
It may just be a region semi, but if it’s quality basketball you’re after, it’s justifiably Viva Loudoun’s Hottest Hoops Of The Week. Tune in on the tweets @VivaLoudoun.
