Ashburn, VA (March 20, 2016) – The Stone Bridge Bulldogs were coming off a win against the Stone Douglas Eagles with a record of two wins and one loss and the team back at full strength. The Churchill Bulldogs started off the scoring in first period with goals by John Taylor (14) on a power play and two goals by Philip Satin (26), one on a power play and the other at even strength. Stone Bridge’s Cade Groton (71) answered back with a goal assisted by Michael McDonald (13) and Ryan Leibold (9). The first period ended with the score 2-1 with Churchill in the lead.
The second period started with Churchill’s Philip Satin (26) giving the Stone Bridge goaltender, Sam Kukulich (31) a hard time with a screaming puck coming his way that ended up in the net. The Bulldogs team captain, Groton, would not let that stop him and his teammates, so he revved things up and scored only a minute and 58 seconds later. Groton was assisted by McDonald (13) and Leibold (9) again. At the end of the 2nd period ended 3-2 with Churchill in the lead.
The final period was a shooting match with the trade-off of goals between both teams. Leibold (9) started off with a power play goal assisted by Groton (71) to tie up the score at three a piece. Then Churchill’s Andrew Kurapov (92) quickly answered back with a go-ahead goal bringing the score 4-3 Churchill. After five minutes back and forth play Satin (26) assisted by John Valas (21) tried to put the icing on the cake for the Churchill Bulldogs. Not so fast, Stone Bridge’s Groton (71) assisted by Thomas Ryerse (6) in a power play situation slammed the puck past Churchill goaltender, Kendall Wong (70), to give Stone Bridge some hope of bring the W home to the hometown school. The Stone Bridge coaching staff decided to pull their goaltender, Kukulich, and leave an open net in order to add another offensive weapon to assist the other five Bulldogs in mounting an attack against Churchill. However, it was well intended plan, but it was all for naught because Churchill’s Kurapov was able to get a hold of the puck with double-digit seconds left in the game and he put the puck into the net sealing the fate of the Stone Bridge Bulldogs season. The final score ended 6-4 with the Churchill Bulldogs advancing to the semi-finals in the 2016 USA Hockey National Championships in the Pure Division.
