Leesburg, Va. (January 17, 2015) – Tuscarora High School senior Laura Vasquez-Bolanos, received a gold award from the Hispanic Heritage Foundation on December 9, in a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
As the gold medalist in the engineering and mathematics category, sponsored by ExxonMobil, Vasquez-Bolanos was awarded a $3,000 scholarship.
Ranked in the top 5 percent of Tuscarora’s senior class, Vasquez-Bolanos was also honored at the 2014 Excellence in Education Banquet on December 7. Vasquez-Bolanos plans to utilize her Hispanic Heritage scholarship in pursuit of a degree in mechanical engineering.
Established by the White House in 1987, the Hispanic Heritage Foundation (HHF) is an educational, non-profit organization that identifies, inspires, prepares and positions Hispanic students to lead in the classroom, community and workforce.
The Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards program offers educational grants to Hispanic high school seniors selected by regional selection committees based upon their academic achievement, leadership, community service, category focus and an essay about the important role their heritage played in achievement of their success.
